Hilleberg Allak
The Allak is the freestanding Hilleberg — three 9 mm poles crossing into a dome that stands on its own, which is what you want on rock, on snow, and anywhere the ground will not take a stake. That costs 28 ounces over the Nallo and $440, and buys two doors, two vestibules and a shape that does not care which way the wind is coming from. At nearly a hundred ounces it is not a light tent; it is a tent you take because you do not want to think about the pitch.
Best for
Rock, snow and shifting wind, where you need a four-season tent that stands without stakes.
Hilleberg Nammatj
The Nammatj is the Nallo built for worse weather: Kerlon 1800 instead of 1200, 10 mm poles instead of 9 mm, and a lower 37.4-inch profile. Ten and a half ounces heavier than the Nallo 2, two more square feet of floor, a smaller vestibule and $350 more. This is Hilleberg's Black Label line, which is the one they will sell you for a winter expedition; the Red Label Nallo is the one for everything short of that.
Best for
Winter expeditions and exposed camps where the tent has to survive conditions you cannot walk away from.
